‘The First Lady of New York’ is the most interesting woman in the world, writes Roxane Gay
Roxane “The First” Gay is an unlikely candidate to take on the role of the next First Lady.
But Gay has a solid track record of bringing a positive, positive message to the office, which has become increasingly polarized following the election of Donald Trump as president.
Since taking the reins of the White House in January, Gay has taken a number of executive orders, including a ban on sanctuary cities and expanded protections for transgender people.
She has also pushed to protect LGBT workers from workplace discrimination, particularly those in the hospitality industry.
“There’s been a lot of talk about the First Lady being the next face of the Democratic Party, but I’m not really sure what the First is supposed to be,” Gay said.
“My first priority is to make sure that people are treated fairly and that people don’t get discriminated against.”
Gay is currently on a mission to raise money for a women’s shelter for domestic violence survivors in the city, a project she hopes will be a focal point of her role in the next administration.
“I’m not going to be there for one minute, so I’ll be there to make a difference, to be a champion, to give people a voice,” she said.
“[But] I’ll also be there when they need me, I’m going to help them out if I can.
I’m definitely going to do what I can.”
Gay, who is African-American, is not the first African-Americans to be considered for the role, as there have been several other candidates who have gone after the job of the First, such as Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian West.
In 2016, she was also a candidate for secretary of labor, but lost out to the current Labor Secretary Tom Perez.
In 2019, Gay was nominated by former president Jimmy Carter to be the first black woman to serve in the Cabinet, but she was defeated by former Vice President Mike Pence.
The First Lady’s role is a complicated one, as the country is grappling with a number issues, including the possibility of a Trump presidency.
“We’re still trying to get over this huge sense of division,” Gay told New York magazine.
“The first thing that comes to mind is the anger, because the President has shown us that he doesn’t care about people’s feelings.
And that’s something that is very important.
He just cares about his own agenda.”
