So, as soon as I started working with 3D, I knew it would be a natural progression and I had no idea what it would lead to.
I thought it would have to be a different kind of experience for people who aren’t familiar with it.”
Michael O’Conner is an artist and illustrator who has worked in both design and architecture.
He has worked on a number of projects for organisations including the University of Sydney and The Australian Institute of Architects.
His work has been featured on the front pages of publications including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian Financial Review and the Australian Financial Services Journal.

“In the past couple of years, I’ve had a number the challenge of creating an original 3D project for a major project that’s been approved by the government, for example, to be used in a major tourism project, that has the potential to create hundreds of thousands of jobs, so there’s a sense of excitement, a sense that I’m on a mission,” he said.
“I was able to do a project in one day that involved a lot of time in the studio and also an online portal to find people and download some of the files, so I think I’m now one step closer to my dream of creating something that will have a significant impact on the lives of people across Australia.”
Mr O’Connors original idea for the project was to create a 3d map of the state, but he realised that this would be too expensive and time consuming, so he opted to focus on a more practical application of the technology.
“My first thought was that you can use your 3D software to make a map of a city, for instance, and the problem is, what is the best way to make that map?” he said.
“I started out thinking of an idea to use my 3D graphics to create an image of the landscape, or a 3-D representation of the environment.
This was my first real-time use of 3D and it was really interesting, because it allowed me to see the detail of what was going on and to get an idea of how the landscape looked like and where it was, what sort of things were around it and where there were buildings.”
He used a 3ds Max project viewer to draw the image and then converted the image into a map, which he could then edit out using a software program.
“The whole process of making a map was actually quite easy and there were no special tools needed.
It was all very straightforward,” he explained.”
If you know what you’re looking at, you can easily get a sense if you’re getting the full effect.”
Mr Pughs work has since been featured in the New South Wales Bulletin, the Sydney Morning Mail, the Canberra Times, the Australian, ABC Local and ABC News, among other publications.
He said his work was not the first time he has explored the technology but was the first to use it in a 3 dimensional way.
“You can actually use it to explore the landscape in real time, so when I started using 3D to create maps, it was something that I thought would be really cool and I was really happy with how it turned out,” he added.
“It wasn’t the first thing I was interested in doing, but it was definitely the first that I wanted to do in a way that wasn’t a big project, but was something I could share with other people.”
